Holiday Reading Guide

The Winter Queen The Winter Queen by Boris Akunin. It’s been ages since I’ve gotten into fiction, but I dove into this book at the end of my holiday and am finding it thoroughly engrossing. A naive 19th century Russian police clerk becomes embroiled in international intrigue. I’ve got the second volume, Murder on the Leviathan, (there are 4 in the series) all lined up.

Julie and Julia Julie and Julia by Julie Powell. Julie Powell started a blog to document her attempts to cook her way through Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Powell has a personal and quirky writing style, but I set this aside after I started reading a few pages of The Winter Queen.

Breath by Breath Breath by Breath by Larry Rosenberg. This is a guide to vipassana mediation; it’s a combination of practical and theoretical advice, with a focus on using the breath as a vehicle to deepen your meditation practice regardless of how experienced you are. It’s got some really useful insights too into weaving your practice into the fabric of your everyday life rather than keeping it as something distinct and rarified.
